4 Key Considerations For Designing Hygienic and Highly Functional Office Restrooms

  • December 27, 2022
  • 6 Min Read

A well-designed office restroom not only helps improve user experience, but also goes a long way in boosting workplace efficiency and building a strong brand reputation. Office restrooms should, therefore, be thoughtfully designed, with hygiene and functionality being two most notable considerations when it comes to elements such as bathroom partitions. Continuing the discussion,  in this post, we list some of the key factors that need to be kept in mind when looking to design a hygienic and highly functional office restroom.

1. Cubicle Design

Traditional restrooms used to be designed as per the wet restroom style, wherein the bathroom divider walls used to touch the floor on all sides. This often led to accumulation of dust and dirt in the corners, making cleaning no less than a Herculean task. Such cubicles can easily become a breeding ground for disease-causing pathogens. Contemporary bathroom partitions and restroom cubicles are designed according to the dry restroom style so that there’s enough space between the partitioning walls and the floor to allow ease of cleaning while keeping the space dry.

2. Material

The material used to manufacture restroom solutions such as bathroom partitions and urinal partitions is an important factor to consider when designing an office restroom. HPL is considered one of the best restroom solutions materials as it offers several benefits such as high durability, resistance to stains and scratches, resistance to fire, and great visual appeal. Most importantly, HPL from industry leaders such as Sturdo from Greenlam has antimicrobial properties that help prevent the growth and transmission of disease causing germs.

3. Foot Traffic

Office restrooms should be designed keeping the foot traffic in mind. They should be spacious and must have a enough number of cubicles and urinary facilities to accommodate the maximum number of users expected during peak hours. For instance, most employees use the restroom during the lunch break. So the maximum number of people expected to visit the restroom during a particular time should be a key factor when designing the office restroom.

4. Ventilation

Lack of proper ventilation can lead to reduced air quality and a pungent smell in the restroom, leaving a bad user experience. A properly ventilated restroom, on the other hand, facilitates a constant flow of fresh air in the restroom and helps prevent the growth of germs and bacteria.  It is, therefore, advisable to make sure there are enough windows and exhaust fans when designing an office restroom.
